Chennai, Sep 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) PMK leader and former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the Tamil Nadu government to close all liquor shops within three years, saying the damage caused by alcohol consumption outweighs the revenue earned from its sale.
In a separate statement, he also questioned the state’s law and order situation following recent killings.
Ramadoss proposed shutting 1,000 liquor outlets annually as part of a phased closure programme. His demand centred on what he described as the heavy human and economic cost of alcohol addiction, particularly its contribution to deaths among men.
Citing figures in his statement, he claimed that Tamil Nadu recorded 1.10 lakh more male deaths than female deaths last year. He attributed much of this difference to causes associated with alcohol consumption, although the statement did not specify the source of the figures or a detailed breakdown of deaths.
According to Ramadoss, alcohol addiction contributes to accidents and suicides, besides heart ailments and kidney failure.
He argued that these consequences should also be considered when assessing the overall impact of liquor sales, rather than focusing only on the money flowing into government coffers.
Ramadoss claimed that the government receives Rs 60,000 crore annually from the liquor trade. However, he maintained that the losses resulting from alcohol consumption were much greater than the revenue, making a phased shutdown of outlets necessary.
The statement called for all shops to be closed within three years, while specifying an annual closure target of 1,000 outlets. It did not explain how that yearly target would achieve the complete shutdown sought within the proposed period.
Separately, Ramadoss expressed concern over what he described as a recent increase in murders across Tamil Nadu.
He cited a double murder in Tirunelveli and the killing of a young man in front of his family in Chennai.
Referring to these incidents, he strongly questioned the direction in which the state’s law and order situation was heading.
His criticism focused on the seriousness of the killings and the concerns they raised about public safety.
The two statements addressed distinct issues: the consequences of alcohol consumption and the recent murders.
While Ramadoss linked alcohol to several causes of death in his demand for liquor shop closures, the statements did not establish an alcohol connection to the specific killings cited in his separate criticism of law and order.
